She is Diva

September 24, 2008

Today was picture day at school. Today, I realized I’m raising a Diva.

I knew it already. When we walk the trail together on Saturdays — we always have to do our little Diva Dance before we go home…

“What’s up, girlfriend?”

“What’s up?!”

Chick Chick
Bonk Bonk
Shake, shake, shake, shake
Turn, Look

But this morning… agonizing.

My little baby girl was panicking at the thought of having to wear the outfit her MOTHER picked out for her to wear on picture day.

There were words. There was pleading. There were tears.

We finally compromised on an outfit and I thought all was well. She let me do her hair how I wanted to do it. She was gorgeous. It was going to be a good day.

After I picked her up from school, she let me know that it didn’t go as perfectly as she had planned. The photographer made her show her teeth when she smiled.

She has always had such a pretty smile — showing her pearly whites, until now. You see, now, she has what she calls, “two big gaps.”

She doesn’t doesn’t believe that years from now she will look back at the picture and think, ‘how cute…missing some front teeth.’

All she thinks is that she looks weird… in a Wally voice, “We-ird.” I’m more worried about why she is so worried about her appearance at such a young age.

She is Diva.

So for now we must kiss her big beautiful smile goodbye. She will only give us the patented, closed-mouth smile.

Ladies and gentleman, I give you — the closed-mouthed smile…
